A successful data strategy will improve City services by helping us reduce costs, increase transparency, address complex challenges, and identify disparities and equity issues. We aim to:
- Unlock the power of data to achieve better impact and outcomes
- Strengthen data management and quality standards in City government
- Empower City staff and residents to lead and innovate with data
Do you live or work in Seattle? To create and launch a successful strategy, we need your help!
Join a Mini-Hackathon!
Are you interested in using public data to design a dashboard that tells a story or highlights an issue in Seattle? Join us for a mini-hackathon at the Tableau Fremont headquarters, hosted by Salesforce.
Teams of up to six participants will design and develop a dashboard or visualization using Seattle Open Data. Anyone, regardless of experience, is welcome to form a team or join with others at the event. Our developers and data experts will be available for coaching and technical help before and throughout the event.
This is a friendly competition! A panel of judges, including the Seattle Interim Chief Technology Officer and Mayor’s Office and Tableau representatives, will score dashboards. The winning team or teams will receive a non-monetary award and will be recognized by the City, including on the Innovation Hub.
Lunch, coffee, and snacks will be provided.

Why a City Data Strategy?
Seattle is recognized as a national leader in understanding data, tracking progress, and using data and evidence to make decisions. The City Data Alliance with Bloomberg Philanthropies will help us do even more to improve and expand our data use.
Through the City Data Alliance, we are developing the One Seattle Data Strategy to institutionalize and expand Seattle’s use of data by building shared best practices and guidelines across departments to better serve residents.
Thoughtful use of data is central to providing excellent public service. The One Seattle Data Strategy will further Mayor Harrell’s vision to create a culture of effective data-based decision-making.
